Organizational Citizenship is work tasks or behaviors that support the social or psychological environment. The definitive factors of organizational responsibility are social responsibility and community involvement.
Social responsibility is the principle that both individuals and organizations should contribute to the welfare of society and not be solely focused on maximizing profits.
Community Involvement is the participation that both individuals and organizations use to establish and maintain a mutually beneficial relationship with the communities in which they operate.
Organizational Citizenship behaviors were once thought of as an individual’s personal choice of voluntary support. Today Organizational Citizenship is often mandated by organizations because of its important impact on the effectiveness and efficiency of work teams and overall organizational success.
The two most important factors of organizational citizenship are social responsibility and community involvement.
So, how does social responsibility positively affect an organization when the focus is mainly on productivity and the bottom line?
Both employees and consumers want social responsibility. There is a growing demand for more social responsibility in the workplace. Worker’s reward socially responsible organizations with increased engagement, which leads to increased productivity and revenue.
In today’s competitive marketplace every business must make a consistent effort to get new customers and new employees. Advertising is one of the most common and effective ways to generate new business and build an employment brand, however advertising can be extremely costly.
The use of the internet is another popular method, however this can require a lot of time and maintenance. Involvement in the community is a great way to get your business’ name known throughout the area and studies have shown employee engagement increases with the availability of employee volunteer opportunities. For example, involvement in local activities can result in positive word of mouth advertising.
Let’s review the definitive factors of organizational citizenship:
First, once thought of as voluntary, today organizational citizenship is often mandated by organizations because of its important impact on organizational success.
Secondly, there is a growing demand for social responsibility from both employees and consumers.
Third, workers reward socially responsible organizations with increased engagement which leads to increased productivity and revenue.
And finally, participation from both individuals and organizations to establish and maintain relationships in the communities they operate is called community involvement.
