Another term I’d like to briefly address is, “Dashboard”. Dashboards are often confused with Scorecards. Much like a scorecard, a dashboard is a tool that captures key performance indicators and other relevant business data. It is meant to simplify information so it can be understood quickly.
However, the dashboard is more operational in nature and usually provides data in real-time. Its purpose is to help illustrate what’s happening in the business at a high level and visualize the performance, much like a dashboard in an automobile.
In contrast, the scorecard is more strategic in nature and is meant to align KPIs with organizational goals and actions. As technology and immediate feedback systems continue to improve, I suspect these two tools will converge and become one in the same.
