Make it is a two way discussion! Don't make it a lecture.

Be aware of rater bias. Don't assume anyone is immune!

Ensure the system is as most objective as possible and don't be subjective and vague.

Evaluate pay-for-performance programs with your business strategy, industry and organization's culture in mind. Don't do it in a vacuum.
