Title: Where Does Assessment Fit into the Employment Cycle?
Module: Setting The Foundation
If you currently use assessments at your firm, then they are likely being used only at one stage of the talent management life cycle for a very specific
purpose such as pre-employment testing for all your hourly workers or perhaps your salespeople. If this is true at your firm, do not worry because
you are definitely not alone. In fact, the most recent global talent assessment report by the Corporate Executive Board, which was recently acquired
by Gartner, found that nearly twice as many organizations measure talent only for pre-hires or pre-employment testing rather than incorporating
assessments into other stages of the employment lifecycle.
However, talent assessment can be incorporated into many different talent management areas across your talent’s tenure. Beyond the employee selection process, talent assessment can be leveraged in expediting the on-boarding of new hires to accelerate their socialization and hence, their time to ramp up to full productivity.
Talent assessments are also valuable tools to guide career development and leadership development, which the research shows is the second most common way assessments are utilized. Many organizations find talent assessment provide valuable data to help inform promotional decisions too. Assessments can play an important role in talent mobility as well.
You might be surprised to hear that talent assessment can appropriately be used at every level of the organizational hierarchy from the c-suite all the way down through hourly employees. In this course, you will learn how assessments are used and how the approach differs for these vastly different populations.
Beyond all this, your talent assessment database can be a valuable source of talent insights into your firm’s current and future people capabilities. In fact, this talent data gives HR opportunities to be more strategic since talent data is the cornerstone for HR analytics. Best in class firms use the data to boost talent outcomes and to inform their business decisions.
Thanks to Human Resources professionals like yourself, more and more business leaders have come to understand that their business’s success is heavily reliant upon, surprise, its people. Thus, leaders are paying closer attention to their organization’s talent and sizing up their Human Capital.
Would you like to ask those leaders what they think about their talent? Well, a large research study did just this for us and found a general sentiment among many leaders was that their people are underprepared for the challenges required to succeed in achieving their business goals. This may sound like bad news to you.
But actually it’s a great opportunity for us HR professionals for two reasons (1) this course will arm you with sufficient talent assessment knowledge to create targeted talent assessment initiatives for ensuring the business has the people capabilities needed to achieve its objectives and (2) top leadership teams make it a priority to clear any identified obstacles to achieving the business goals. Hence, they will be highly motivated to fund the talent assessment initiatives necessary if you just help them clearly see the talent problem and make the business case for it.
